I love trying to climb up things in MMOs, it's something which saddened me about Revelation Online, because you could get to everywhere easily and there was no challenge, games like Blade and Soul made it a challenge to get to the top of cliffs, and high places so it would be really neat if A:ir has some of those aspects in terms of climbing to high and practically impossible to reach places.

I doubt that since this game seems to offer many flying abilities through jetpacks, mounts, shuttle and zeppelin but there is still a chance that you can't reach everything like that.

The issue with the game I mentioned (RO) is that you had endless flight, and your running and jumping capabilities was practically boundless, you could scale a building with a single tap of a space bar - this game seems much more grounded in the sense that a jump is a jump, a leap is a leap. Being able to traverse in areas with airships will be a lot of fun, but giving ourselves the challenge in areas which may be too small for an airship to fit will surely be a different experience.

I have to agree with @Atorasu while wouldn't be a game breaker it would be fun to have some "flight restricted" areas where you can sit and try to climb and jump up the side of things, or even possibly add some jump puzzles in dotted around the world for those that like this sort of thing to explore and find.

Maybe, the trailer make me think that flying is a good part of this game (it's in the AIR) but it is also probable that most flying abilities are part of the endgame content forcing players to walk and respect the layout of the field.

Yeah, based solely on the quote
I would say it's almost definitely not "100% open world no instances". You can't really do an "open dungeon" setup and have people choosing their difficulty simultaneously. If the dungeons are customizable, it almost definitely means you won't walk into a dungeon and see everyone who's running it at once.

I think the quote in the gamasutra article may literally be talking about the game's level design (whether it's all one instance outside of instanced areas remains to be seen, I suppose). For instance, if you're going through a cramped cave or walking through a city with buildings all around you—That isn't very open. You're essentially guided from Point A to Point B, think of games like Warframe before Plains of Eidolon—Very "closed" in terms of map design. Plains of Eidolon, in comparison, is "open"—but it's still its own instance.

    That's my guess, anyway.

    [Edit]:
I think another thing to be considering here is that everyone has a different definition of "open world".

To some it means "no/minimal instances" (BDO, for the most part), to others it means "I can travel place-to-place" (GW2 is an example of a multiple maps/instances game where you can freely travel around). So we'd have to get some specifics on what they're thinking even if we do get a "It's open world!" answer.

The world map looks very fragmented which could means areas are instanced (I hope that's not the case).
Then again, it being very fragmented and torn apart makes sense with all the mobility and flying that seems to be a key feature of AIR.

I'm hoping for a rather open world with few loading screens, if any at all.

If you did not play BDO, you could get this incredible sense of scale and exploration in it.

    Hello everyone,
Some game features might slightly change over the next months but it is planned to have male and female versions for all classes.
Also A:IR is in concept an open world game, so exploring will be a thing but loading screens may occur between regions.

Then I just hope that regions are big enough to not feel boxed.

I don't know where you actually got that Info regarding the genderlocked Classes from since it's false Information.
The offical FAQ on this Forum says:
"Are the classes of A:IR gender locked?
    • Bluehole is planning to add both genders to each class."

    Appreciate this, Praballo!

With the way the world map looks, as @xDrac mentioned, I think loading screens between regions seems pretty likely. Flying between them would be pretty cool, but ultimately might add a lot of time in which people are doing absolutely nothing in a completely empty space. Works for games like EVE, not so sure it'd fly (haha, get it?) in a game like this. But, if they can make flying between them work then I'm all for it!

Hopefully the loading times between regions won't be that long then, totally fine with some loading screens that load in a decent speed.

Found specific mentioning of instanced dungeons here. The regions "Goblin Cave", "Ilsa's Nest", "Fog/Foggy ???" (some pirate area), and Sunsetville Outskirts Defense/Sunsetville Outskirts Reconnaissance are all labeled "indun" (인던) meaning "Instanced Dungeon".

Dragon Valley is specifically labeled as a battlefield (전장).

(Names of the areas are machine translated so those could be wrong, but the instanced dungeon and battlefield are specific.)
